Eight-Player Map Control
Each Generals.io match places eight players on a shared 2D map. You begin with a single base and must capture neutral tiles to expand. Every tile holds troops, and those numbers determine whether an attack succeeds or fails. The map layout, including maze-like sections, creates natural chokepoints and open flanks, so where you expand matters as much as when.
Reading the Board
Troop counts sit visibly on every tile. Before attacking, you compare your stack against the defender's. Upgrading your own tiles makes them harder to capture, which slows enemy pushes and buys time to gather reinforcements. Because all eight players act simultaneously, a strong position on one side of the map can collapse if you ignore another. Constant scanning of troop totals and border changes is part of the core loop, not an optional habit.
Controls and Planning Tools
Click your base or any owned tile to select it, then click an adjacent tile to send troops. Dragging the map or using WASD and arrow keys repositions your view. Spacebar deselects, Q clears queued moves, and E undoes your last move. Queuing and undoing let you plan short sequences without committing instantly, which matters when several threats appear at once.
Defense, Expansion, and Timing
Upgrading tiles around your base builds a barrier, but sitting still loses ground. You need to expand for resources and position, then convert that advantage into an attack. Striking too early wastes troops; striking too late lets opponents fortify. The game rewards reading opponent behavior and adjusting your plan mid-match.
